Syllabus

HORTICULTURE
A. CLASSROOM RULES
-be here on time
-exercise courtesy and respect
-come prepared with necessary materials (pencil/pen, folder)
-food and beverages are acceptable to consume in the classroom, as long as they do not distract from the learning experience
Students are expected to participate in all “hands-on” activities; in most instances, simple observation is not acceptable. Bring or wear appropriate clothing and shoes each day.
B. COURSE CONTENT
By its nature, horticulture is seasonal. For this reason, some lessons will be taught out of sequence.
We hope to cover:
1. Introduction to Horticulture
2. Careers in Horticulture
3. Plant Functions
4. Plant Propagation
5. Sales and Merchandizing
6. Pest Management
7. Pruning Trees and Shrubs
8. Lawn Establishment and Maintenance
9. Design: Floral, Landscape, Flowerbed
C. GRADES
-worksheets, possibly journals, lab evaluations
-regular quizzes (including identification) and final exam
-small group and class project participation
-10% of student grade will reflect effort and attitude
-10% of student grade will reflect attendance
-any “cheating” will automatically result in a zero value on that paper/test or project.
Attendance is critical in this course; much of the “hands-on” material cannot be made up.

-funds generated from sales will be used to cover the purchase of supplies, any profits will go toward the St. Charles FFA chapter.
E. FIELD TRIPS
Built into the Horticulture curriculum are related experiences outside of the school facilities. It is your responsibility to dress appropriately for the weather and for the activity the class will be engaged in. Have extra clothing and footwear in your locker if necessary, being unprepared is no excuse
