College Admission Assessments

Be sure to check out specific requirements your college/university/ or technical school requires for admission; each post-secondary school is different. Most four year colleges accept either the SAT or ACT for admissions. Most two year colleges require an ACCUPLACER for course placement, but will also use SAT/ACT scores and MCA scores for course placement as well. See Mrs. Olson with any questions.

ACT

The ACT test is the admission test required by many colleges.  It is given once each school year to Juniors during the school day, and then on nationally scheduled test dates (Saturdays) at various locations. The ACT can be completed your Junior or Senior Year of High School. It is recommended that you take it twice out of these times:
February (National Test date)
March/April (School test date)  THIS YEAR'S SCHOOL DATE IS April 5th FOR JUNIORS
June (National Test date)
Talk to your Counselor about when is the right time to take it for your college path. Seniors planning to take the ACT again should take the it no later than December of their senior year.

The ACT tests your English, math, reading, and natural science reasoning skills.  Composite scores range from 1-36.  The ACT offers a written component for an additional charge. It is recommended that you take the ACT with Writing once, as some colleges require a writing score. The ACT can be taken as many times as the student chooses. Colleges will use the student’s highest composite score.  To register for the ACT log into: www.actstudent.org. You will need to create a username and password, and have a debit card ready. ASVAB

The ASVAB is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery in the world. The ASVAB was originally designed to predict future academic and occupational success in military occupations. Several composite scores are formed from different combinations of ASVAB test scores. Three composites, or Career Exploration Scores, are provided specifically to help students engage in career exploration. These scores help students to get a good sense of their verbal, math, and science and technical skills compared to other students in the same grade. This report shows grade-specific, gender-specific, and combined standard scores and score bands for all eight tests and three Career Exploration Scores. It also provides students with percentile-based interpretations of those scores.

ACCUPLACER

ACCUPLACER is a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate students' skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. This assessment offers immediate results which many community colleges and technical schools utilize to make decisions regarding course placement for incoming students. If students completing this assessment have a documented disability and need test accommodations, contact your institution's testing center for more information.

SAT

The SAT and SAT Subject Tests are designed to assess your academic readiness for college. Some colleges may require the SAT to be complete, so it is important to keep in mind the colleges that you are considering after high school when decided if the SAT is right for you. These exams provide a path to opportunities, financial support, and scholarships, in a way that's fair to all students. The SAT and SAT Subject Tests keep pace with what colleges are looking for today, measuring the skills required for success in the 21st century. Talk to your counselor for more information!
